Amya Lopez is originally from Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, and began her dance training at age three at The Dance Factory under the direction of Tina Hansen. She earned her BFA in Dance from the University of Iowa, where she was on the Dean’s List every semester and performed in numerous productions and festivals including Dance Gala, the Faculty Graduate Concert, the American College Dance Association Conference, and the Trifecta Dance Festival. While at Iowa, Amya was a member of the University of Iowa Dance Company under the direction of Melinda Jean Myers and toured the Midwest performing the evening-length work Right Here. During her senior year, she was selected to perform in the restaging of Martha Graham’s Panorama under the direction of Virginie Mécène and performed alongside the Martha Graham Dance Company in the GRAHAM100 performance at Hancher Auditorium.
After graduating, Amya joined the Visceral Dance Chicago Trainee Program, performing
works by Nick Pupillo, Abdiel Figueroa Reyes, Braeden Barnes, and Megan Rhodes. She has also trained at several prestigious intensives including SANCTA, Orsolina28, the Oklahoma International Dance Festival, CHAPTERS by Talia Favia, the London Spring Tour, and the Cecchetti Council of America Summer Intensive. She is also a recipient of the Claire Bataille Legacy Scholarship from Chicago Movement Collective.
Amya currently teaches ballet, jazz, contemporary, lyrical, modern, and strength and
conditioning to students ages 3–18, as well as adult ballet classes, at studios throughout the Chicagoland and southeastern Wisconsin areas. She also works as a rehearsal director and competition coach, offering private training for students preparing solo and group pieces.
